Lufthansa Secures Deal for 49.9% Stake in TAP Air Portugal

The Portuguese government has selected Deutsche Lufthansa to acquire a 49.9% stake in flag carrier TAP, effectively sidelining rival Air France-KLM in a privatization deal valued at 1.2 billion euros. Prime Minister Luis Montenegro confirmed the move, marking a pivotal shift in the ownership structure of the national airline.

The state intends to retain a controlling 50.1% interest in the carrier, maintaining a significant footprint in the company's future operations. According to Montenegro, the selection of the German aviation group represents the most viable path to securing the airline's long-term stability and aligning it with national interests. The agreement concludes a competitive bidding process that began last summer when Lisbon first announced its intention to offload nearly half of the airline’s equity.

Both Lufthansa and the Franco-Dutch conglomerate Air France-KLM had submitted nonbinding offers in April, setting the stage for months of negotiations. While the Portuguese administration has finalized its choice, Lufthansa officials have yet to issue a formal statement regarding the acquisition. Air France-KLM representatives also remained silent following the government's announcement.
