Booking.com Predicts Shift Toward Personalized and Off-Script Travel

Canadian travel habits are undergoing a structural shift, moving away from traditional itineraries toward highly personalized, mood-based, and unconventional experiences. New research from Booking.com suggests that by 2027, factors ranging from dietary changes and complex relationship dynamics to paranormal curiosity will dictate where and how people spend their time away.

Booking.com Predicts Shift Toward Personalized and Off-Script Travel

The report highlights a growing demand for flexibility, with 71% of travellers seeking vacation packages that allow them to strip away unwanted components. This trend is driven by evolving health and lifestyle choices, as 56% of respondents indicate their destination selection is now dictated by personal wellness needs. Romantic travel is also evolving, with 39% of Canadian couples actively using trips as a venue to resolve interpersonal conflicts, often utilizing physical challenges like hiking to facilitate difficult conversations.

Technological integration remains a primary driver for these behavioral changes. Roughly 76% of Gen Z travellers are willing to share wearable data to achieve deeper trip personalization, while over half of the workforce is looking to AI to manage administrative burdens and emails during their leave. Additionally, the boundary between travel and the unknown is blurring, with 59% of respondents expressing interest in paranormal-themed experiences or explorations of the afterlife. As Chief Marketing Officer Paul Hennessy notes, the industry is moving toward a model where travel serves as an expression of individual intent rather than a rigid, formulaic experience.
