Interplay Learning Debuts Simulation-Based Trade Assessments

Traditional certifications often fail to reveal whether a technician can actually perform in the field, leaving employers to gamble on workforce readiness. Interplay Learning is shifting this dynamic with its new Skill Verification tool, providing objective, step-by-step data on a worker’s hands-on abilities before they ever touch physical equipment.

Interplay Learning Debuts Simulation-Based Trade Assessments

The Austin-based company launched its initial catalog of 20 assessments on October 15, 2026, targeting sectors ranging from commercial HVAC and manufacturing to data centers. By utilizing virtual simulations that mirror real-world environments, the platform evaluates proficiency in high-stakes tasks like industrial electrical lockout/tagout procedures and digital multimeter operation. Unlike conventional multiple-choice tests, these simulations generate detailed performance scores that highlight specific technical errors and decision-making gaps.

Matt Ellenberg, director of training at Southern Home Services, noted that while technicians may hold credentials from organizations like OSHA or the EPA, those papers do not always translate to on-site competence. The new verification tool offers a repeatable benchmark for supervisors to evaluate talent across different shifts and service partners. CEO Doug Donovan stated that the platform provides the concrete evidence needed to identify skill gaps quickly, allowing firms to deploy qualified workers with higher confidence in their safety and technical execution.
