Epic to Unveil Prescription Price Comparison Tool in 2027

More than 4 in 10 U.S. adults currently skip or delay filling prescriptions due to high costs, a barrier Epic aims to dismantle by summer 2027. The health software giant is launching Prescription Marketplace, a tool allowing patients and clinicians to compare pharmacy cash prices against insurance co-pays before prescriptions are finalized.

The platform integrates directly into the Epic health system, displaying real-time pricing options at the point of care. While Epic’s existing Real-Time Prescription Benefit feature previously helped patients save over $250 million in 2025 by highlighting insurance-covered costs and generic alternatives, the new marketplace expands this transparency to include direct cash pricing.

Industry partners including Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs, Amazon Pharmacy, Costco, and Eli Lilly have collaborated on the development. Mark Cuban, co-founder of Cost Plus Drugs, emphasized that patients often overpay for medications simply because they lack visibility into cheaper alternatives while still in the exam room. By exposing these price differences, the system seeks to reduce medication abandonment at the pharmacy counter and simplify the often opaque process of purchasing drugs. Representatives from participating companies are scheduled to discuss the initiative further at the Open@Epic conference in Verona, Wisconsin, on October 21.
