The Airborne Sensing Lab (ASL) brings together TerraSense Analytics, the University of British Columbia’s Survive and Thrive Applied Research initiative, and KF Aerospace. Their data-collection platform is designed to feed essential intelligence into the development of the CQ-9B Guardian, a project managed by Team SkyGuardian Canada. This initiative aims to deliver 11 remotely piloted aircraft to the Royal Canadian Air Force by 2028.

49North Taps Airborne Sensing Lab for Canadian RPAS Target Tech
A consortium led by TerraSense Analytics has secured a contract from 49North to develop maritime target-classification technology for Canada’s Remotely Piloted Aircraft System project. The group, known as the Airborne Sensing Lab, will utilize electro-optical and infrared imagery gathered over the Strait of Georgia to enhance the program’s automated capabilities.

This contract is a component of a $78.2 million agreement between 49North—a subsidiary of MDA Space—and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems. By integrating homegrown technology from SMEs and academic partners, 49North intends to fulfill the Canadian government’s industrial strategy, emphasizing sovereign control over critical defense assets. The collaboration leverages the specialized aircraft and operational expertise of KF Aerospace to ensure the platform meets the rigorous demands of national security missions.
