Single-Day TMS Shows Promise for Bipolar Depression in New Study

Thirty adults living with bipolar I depression found relief through an experimental, accelerated treatment protocol that condensed a full course of transcranial magnetic stimulation into a single day. The findings, published in the journal Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, offer a potential path forward for patients unresponsive to conventional psychiatric care.

Single-Day TMS Shows Promise for Bipolar Depression in New Study

The ONE-BD case series, a collaboration between Salience TMS Neuro Solutions and Ampa Health, tested whether an intensive, one-day regimen could overcome the logistical hurdles of traditional TMS, which typically requires daily sessions over several weeks. Participants received 20 sessions of three-minute magnetic stimulation, spaced at 20-minute intervals, supplemented by a single dose of the medication D-cycloserine to potentially boost neuroplasticity.

Clinical data from the study indicate that the approach is both safe and effective. All 30 participants completed the treatment without experiencing serious adverse events or induced manic episodes. By the six-week mark, 73.3% of the cohort met the criteria for a positive treatment response, while 43.3% reached full remission according to the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. While these outcomes are encouraging, researchers emphasize that this is a preliminary study and further randomized controlled trials are required to validate the clinical efficacy of this accelerated model.
