GM to shutter Brownstown battery plant as lease expires

General Motors is closing its Brownstown Battery Assembly plant south of Detroit, a move the automaker insists is a simple real estate decision rather than a retreat from its broader electrification goals. The site, which currently handles assembly for the Cadillac Celestiq and Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, will cease operations as its lease concludes.

The company confirmed that the facility's current workforce and production responsibilities will transition to other GM locations, though specific sites for the relocation remain undisclosed. Brownstown has served as a specialized hub for both battery packs and electric drive units, supporting key high-performance models within the manufacturer's lineup.

While the industry grapples with shifting federal incentives following the repeal of certain EV production subsidies, GM maintains that its long-term strategy remains intact. The firm continues to push forward with the Chevrolet Silverado EV and the Chevrolet Bolt while investing $900 million into a new facility dedicated to accelerating the commercialization of advanced battery chemistries, including lithium-manganese-rich and sodium-ion technologies.
