The AI Management Gap: Why Productivity Tools Are Creating New Burdens

More than half of senior leaders report that evaluating employee performance has become significantly more difficult since the integration of AI. As work arrives at desks already polished by algorithms, managers are spending more time auditing output rather than directing strategy, struggling to distinguish human effort from machine generation.

The AI Management Gap: Why Productivity Tools Are Creating New Burdens

A survey of 1,700 directors and senior managers, commissioned by Monday.com, highlights a disconnect between corporate enthusiasm and operational reality. While 94% of leaders express excitement about AI’s potential, the rapid pace of adoption has outstripped internal processes. Managers are now forced to navigate a landscape where they oversee more fragmented software tools than before, contrary to initial expectations that AI would consolidate their digital infrastructure.

This shift has birthed a new category of invisible labor: the constant supervision of AI agents and the review of machine-assisted output. Nearly 40% of leaders now use AI to draft performance reviews, a practice that introduces significant risks regarding bias and objective assessment. As LLMs act as prediction machines, they threaten to bake historical prejudices into the evaluation process. Meanwhile, 58% of managers expect to oversee more AI agents than human staff within the next year, fueling anxiety over accountability for autonomous decisions that remain difficult to predict.
