General Motors pivots OnStar toward agentic AI

Thirty years after launching its subscription-based connected car service, General Motors is pivoting OnStar from a reactive call center into a proactive intelligence platform. The automaker aims to embed agentic AI directly into the driving experience, starting with the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq EV, to compete with tech-forward rivals.

The company’s new AI assistant will debut in the coming months, marking a significant departure from previous software updates. GM plans to consolidate its fragmented mobile presence by replacing the existing OnStar Guardian app and individual brand-specific applications for Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC with a single, unified interface in 2027. This ecosystem will sync directly with in-car software to provide predictive support, ranging from climate control adjustments to vehicle feature inquiries.

Sterling Anderson, GM’s chief product officer, describes this as a shift toward a connected intelligence model. Beyond voice commands, the system leverages vehicle cameras to monitor surroundings, automatically capturing and uploading footage if the car detects aggressive behavior or potential incidents. This integration is part of a broader mandate to catch up with global competitors by making software the central nervous system of the vehicle rather than an add-on feature.

However, the rollout faces the shadow of recent regulatory scrutiny. Following a Federal Trade Commission order earlier this year that restricted how GM shares driver data with third-party reporting agencies, the company is emphasizing new privacy controls. Customers will now have granular management over data permissions, with encrypted recordings and explicit consent protocols. While GM notes that withholding certain data may limit access to specific features, the company maintains that the core OnStar services remain available to all users.
