Utah Deputy Under Fire After Body-Slamming Protester at County Meeting

Aspen Azalea, a 27-year-old protester, is demanding the termination of Utah County Sheriff’s Deputy Phillip Crawford after security footage captured him slamming her to the floor during a planning commission meeting. The incident occurred Wednesday in Provo while local residents voiced opposition to the approval of a new artificial intelligence data center.

The confrontation unfolded after officials unanimously approved controversial data center regulations without public comment. Video footage shows Crawford removing Azalea from the main chamber before throwing her face-first onto the lobby floor. Azalea sustained a concussion and bruising to her jaw, knee, and shoulder during the encounter. She remains adamant that the force used against her was entirely disproportionate to her actions.

While the Utah County Sheriff’s Office alleges that Azalea kicked the deputy in the groin, she flatly denies the claim. Azalea noted that the location of the throw nearly resulted in a catastrophic injury against a nearby bench, stating that she could have been killed had the deputy positioned her a few feet differently. Despite acknowledging she shouted during the meeting—a tactic she has employed at previous sessions—she maintains that her behavior did not warrant such physical aggression. Azalea currently faces misdemeanor charges, including assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and disrupting a public meeting.
