The Commonwealth Fund’s latest status report warns that the current erosion of coverage is only the beginning. Many punitive measures from the 2025 budget law, including new work reporting requirements for Medicaid, have yet to reach their full implementation. Projections suggest that by 2036, the number of uninsured individuals could reach 37 million, effectively erasing the gains made since the Affordable Care Act was enacted.
Beyond the loss of coverage, affordability remains a primary driver of medical debt, which now affects 30% of adults. Nearly half of the working-age population is considered inadequately insured, forcing many to skip prescriptions or delay essential care. This financial strain is compounded by rising employer-sponsored costs; according to KFF, workers now pay an average of $7,470 annually for family plans, a 9% jump over 2025 levels.
