The Browser Company to Discontinue Arc Browser in December

The Browser Company will permanently shutter its flagship Arc browser on December 22, 2026, forcing a migration to its AI-focused successor, Dia. The startup, acquired by Atlassian for $610 million last year, cited the escalating engineering costs of maintaining browser security as the primary driver for the platform's sudden sunsetting.

The transition begins immediately, with new account registrations for Arc already disabled. By November 23, the mobile Arc Search application will shed its signature AI features, such as "Browse for Me," and lose tab synchronization capabilities. When the final shutdown arrives in late December, all user accounts will be deactivated, and personal data will be purged within 30 days.

Despite vocal community demands to open-source the software, CEO Josh Miller has confirmed this is not an option. Arc relies on the proprietary Arc Development Kit (ADK), the same engine powering Dia. Releasing the source code would effectively expose the company’s core intellectual property. For current users, the company promises a migration path to Dia, which retains familiar elements like vertical tab layouts, rebranded folder structures, and existing profile environments.
