Nvidia’s Microduck robots trigger holiday shopping frenzy

A viral demonstration at Nvidia’s GTC Berlin conference featuring waddling, R2-D2-mimicking robots has ignited an unexpected consumer rush. Following Jensen Huang’s keynote, preorders for the Microduck units surged past 20,000 in a single day, signaling a potential shift in the holiday toy market toward accessible, open-source robotics.

Developed by Pollen Robotics—now under the Hugging Face and Nvidia umbrella following a September acquisition—these devices represent a pivot toward playful, community-driven hardware. Unlike traditional toys, the Microducks arrive pre-trained on Nvidia’s technology stack to perform basic commands like sitting and summersaulting, yet owners retain the ability to program new tricks and share them through an open-source framework. Clem Delangue of Hugging Face anticipates these units could become the year’s top-selling robotics product, noting that demand is already transcending the youth demographic to capture adult interest.

With shipments scheduled to arrive by Christmas, the robots serve as a tactical PR reprieve for an industry currently grappling with severe security controversies and reports of AI-linked cyberattacks. While the broader sector faces scrutiny over its societal risks, the immediate success of the Microduck suggests that the public remains eager for tangible, lighthearted applications of machine learning, provided they come in a form factor that can perform a convincing nap on command.
