Rivian R2 SUV drives company to record delivery targets

Rivian’s R2 SUV emerged as the company’s best-selling model in the third quarter, providing a crucial lift to the automaker’s financial outlook. On the strength of this early demand, Rivian raised its annual delivery guidance to a minimum of 67,000 vehicles, signaling a departure from a three-year plateau in production volume.

The company’s shift in performance follows a difficult period where annual shipments struggled to exceed 50,000 units. By initiating a second production shift at its Normal, Illinois factory, Rivian successfully delivered 19,248 vehicles in the third quarter—a 45% increase compared to the same period last year. While the company recorded a net loss of $913 million, this figure reflects a narrowing deficit from the $1.2 billion loss reported in the prior year.

The R2’s market entry appears to capitalize on a void left by legacy automakers moving back toward internal combustion and hybrid models. Despite the loss of federal tax credits, the SUV is finding traction with consumers at a starting price point of just under $60,000. Management views the vehicle as a long-term catalyst for profitability, with plans to introduce a $53,990 premium trim later this year and entry-level versions priced at $44,990 by 2027.
