Why Apple's iPhone Duo Won Me Over Despite Its Flaws

After five days of vacationing with the new iPhone Duo alongside my reliable iPhone 17 Pro Max, I expected to return to the familiar comfort of a standard slab phone. Instead, Apple’s first foldable device—with all its quirks, hinge mechanics, and compromises—managed to shift my daily digital habits entirely.

Why Apple's iPhone Duo Won Me Over Despite Its Flaws

Transitioning to the Duo requires overcoming significant hurdles. The most glaring is the return to Touch ID, which feels cumbersome compared to the seamless nature of Face ID, particularly when juggling groceries or a pet leash. Software optimization remains a work in progress; some apps persist with black bars or hidden menus, and the Google Search app proved frustratingly unstable during my testing. Furthermore, the camera system lacks the telephoto reach and low-light prowess of the Pro Max, making it a poor choice for serious content creators.

Yet, the device offers a unique, intentional experience that slab phones fail to replicate. Its compact, folded form factor acts as a physical barrier to mindless scrolling, encouraging more deliberate engagement. Unfolding the screen signals a shift toward focused tasks like multitasking or media consumption rather than reflexive distraction. With its IP68 dust resistance and a virtually invisible hinge, the hardware feels like a polished, whimsical evolution of the smartphone. While not perfect, the Duo succeeds by making technology feel like a tool to be picked up—and more importantly, a device that is easier to put down.
