WEX Bets on AI to Offset Trucking Slump

Persistent weakness in the trucking sector is clouding the end-of-year outlook for WEX, yet the financial services firm is banking on its mobility portfolio and new AI-driven tools to maintain growth. Despite a multiyear slump in freight demand, leadership reports that credit performance remains resilient even as fuel prices remain elevated.

WEX Bets on AI to Offset Trucking Slump

CEO Melissa Smith anticipates fourth-quarter organic revenue growth between 3% and 5%, fueled by a 20.6% year-over-year surge in third-quarter mobility revenue. While high diesel prices have pushed some volume toward rail, the company views this shift as temporary, bolstered by the recent contract renewal of a global logistics leader. CFO Jagtar Narula characterized the firm’s portfolio as healthy, noting that credit behavior has reverted to normal levels compared to the volatility seen at the start of the Russia-Ukraine war.

The firm is actively deploying machine learning to manage this environment. An AI-enhanced credit tool has already adjusted limits for over 215,000 customers this year, providing a buffer against fuel price spikes. Beyond risk management, WEX is testing AI capabilities to provide efficiency recommendations for fleet operators. This includes a new pilot program designed to scale account management functions, offering small-scale fleets the same high-level support previously reserved for large corporate clients.
