Hut 8 Shares Tumble Following Deep Operating Loss

A sharp 15% slide in premarket trading greeted Hut 8 shareholders this morning, as the data-center developer reported a staggering $277.4 million operating loss for the third quarter. Despite a significant rise in net income driven by unrealized digital asset gains, investor sentiment soured over missed revenue expectations.

Revenue for the period landed at $71.1 million, failing to meet the $75.8 million consensus forecast tracked by FactSet. While net income climbed to $126.8 million—up from $33.7 million during the same period last year—the bottom line was heavily bolstered by fluctuating digital asset valuations rather than core business performance.

The Miami-based firm is currently navigating a major strategic shift, moving away from its origins in cryptocurrency mining to focus on artificial intelligence infrastructure. This transition includes a substantial 15-year, $9.8 billion lease agreement for the Beacon Point project in Nueces County, Texas. To execute this expansion, the company has aligned with major industry players including American Electric Power, Vertiv, and Jacobs. Amid these infrastructure efforts, the company also maintains high-profile associations, such as its partnership with Eric Trump on the American Bitcoin project.
