Tripadvisor Reports $316.9 Million Loss as Leaders Prepare to Leave

The travel service is contending with changing habits and intensifying competition for trip-planning information.

Tripadvisor Reports $316.9 Million Loss as Leaders Prepare to Leave

The company reported a loss of $2.70 a share, compared with a profit of $48.5 million, or 39 cents a share, in the year-earlier quarter. Excluding certain one-time items, adjusted earnings were 37 cents a share, below the 43-cent average analyst estimate compiled by FactSet. Revenue declined 11% to $436.4 million.

Goldberg is stepping down from his executive positions and the board by mutual agreement, Tripadvisor said. He will remain chief executive through Feb. 16 to support an orderly transition. Noonan will leave effective Dec. 31 to pursue another opportunity. Kristen Dalton, chief strategy and operations officer, will become interim chief financial officer on Jan. 1.

Tripadvisor also owns Viator, an excursion-booking platform. Its shares fell 17% to $8.50 in premarket trading. Travelers increasingly turn to Instagram, other review services and artificial intelligence for ideas, intensifying competition for travel information, the article said.
