Brookdale Senior Living shares fell 13% to $9.36 Friday after the senior housing operator reported third-quarter revenue below analysts’ expectations and cut its full-year outlook, citing slower occupancy growth.

Brookdale Shares Fall 13% as Revenue and Outlook Decline

Revenue for the third quarter was $712.1 million, down from $813.2 million a year earlier and below the $722.7 million expected by analysts polled by FactSet. The shares are down 13% year to date.

Brookdale now expects full-year adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $495 million to $502 million, with revenue per unit growth of 7.4% to 7.9%. Its previous forecast was adjusted Ebitda of $502 million to $516 million and revenue per unit growth of 8% to 9%.

Chief Executive Nick Stengle said the revised outlook reflects occupancy carryover from the third quarter, additional marketing investments and expenses related to the recent fire at the company’s living center in Clinton, Miss.

Brookdale’s net loss narrowed to $13.9 million, or six cents a share, from $144.7 million, or 48 cents a share, a year earlier. Analysts had expected a loss of three cents a share. The improvement was driven by a $58.2 million reduction in non-cash impairment charges from the prior-year period and a $20.5 million decline in depreciation and amortization expense.
