Jeremy Culhane’s new Elon Musk impression on Saturday Night Live presents the Tesla and SpaceX chief as a fumbling figure eager to win over the Weekend Update hosts. The sketch turns Musk’s recent setbacks into punchlines, then lets his chatbot Grok deliver its own insult: “the worst thing South Africa has ever done.”
During the segment, Colin Jost listed Musk’s moves from California to Texas, saying he left because California was run by Democrats and he wanted to avoid taxes, then built a town in Texas—where Democrats now run the state. Asked how that made him feel, Culhane’s Musk nodded along and answered, “Bad?”
The character tries to laugh off his difficulties and boasts, “My car did a flip!” He also prompts Grok to produce “an epic vulgar roast of me, Elon Musk.” The chatbot obliges, adding, “Maybe if you have 100 more kids, one of them will talk to you.”
The sketch follows a week in which Musk spent half a billion dollars on candidates who lost in the midterms and announced plans to halt Cybertruck production, according to the source article. SNL has also targeted other technology figures this season. Jane Wickline portrayed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei as a stuttering prophet of AI doom, while James Austin Johnson played data center investor and “Marty Supreme” co-star Kevin O’Leary. In response to backlash over data centers, the character said he wanted to buy 40,000 acres of “God’s untouched splendor” and replace it with “a very loud computer that steals your job.”
