Israeli Drone Strikes Test New US-Iran Peace Memorandum

Hours after the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding to halt regional military operations, Israeli drone strikes hit targets in southern Lebanon. The attacks, occurring Thursday, directly challenge the fragile framework meant to end a war that has claimed nearly 3,800 lives since early March.

The strikes targeted Beit Yahoun and a roundabout between Kfartebnit and Arnoun, leaving at least one person dead and three others wounded, according to Lebanon's National News Agency. These operations continue despite the agreement signed in France on Wednesday, which explicitly mandates the cessation of hostilities and guarantees the territorial integrity of Lebanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains defiant, refusing to commit to a troop withdrawal from the area south of the Litani River. While Donald Trump has attempted to frame the ongoing friction as a "little dispute," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei warned that the agreement would be nullified unless the US forces a total Israeli retreat. With Israel currently negotiating its continued military presence with Washington, the durability of the interim pact rests on whether the White House is prepared to impose repercussions for these ongoing violations.
