Voters Blame Trump for Fuel Costs as Iran Conflict Stalls

Seventy-seven percent of Americans hold President Donald Trump responsible for soaring gasoline prices, according to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll. As the national average hovers above $4.00 per gallon, the findings underscore a growing political liability for the GOP, which currently lacks a clear strategy to exit the ongoing conflict with Iran.

Voters Blame Trump for Fuel Costs as Iran Conflict Stalls

The survey of 3,577 registered voters reveals that fuel costs are a primary concern for 78% of the public. This dissatisfaction cuts across party lines, with 82% of Democrats, 79% of Independents, and 73% of Republicans labeling current prices a major issue. While the president maintains he has total control over the Strait of Hormuz, the reality on the ground remains volatile. Iran recently seized two container ships in the waterway, and Pentagon officials informed the House Armed Services Committee that clearing Iranian mines could take six months.

Sarah Chamberlain, president of the Republican Main Street Partnership, admitted that the war is increasingly damaging for her party. The political stakes are high, as 58% of voters stated they are less likely to support candidates who back Trump’s current approach to the Iran situation in the upcoming midterms. Despite these pressures, legislative efforts to curtail the conflict have struggled, with multiple war powers resolutions failing in both the House and Senate. Lawmakers like Rep. Ro Khanna continue to push for new votes, arguing that the administration has failed to provide an exit plan as the economic impact of the war persists.
