Marathon Extinguishes Sunday Blaze at Galveston Bay Refinery

A fire broke out Sunday morning at Marathon Petroleum’s 665,000 barrel-per-day Galveston Bay refinery in Texas, prompting an immediate response from internal safety teams. The company confirmed the blaze was successfully extinguished without any injuries to employees or local residents, marking the latest incident at the expansive industrial site.

The refinery’s safety crews managed to contain the fire shortly after it began, according to a company statement provided to OPIS. While operations remain under scrutiny, the facility is currently working to stabilize its processes following a week of technical instability.

Prior to the fire, the plant reported a sudden, unexpected shutdown of one of its fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) units. Documents filed with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality revealed that this mechanical trip triggered flaring and emissions that persisted for at least 23 hours. As the FCC unit is a primary driver for gasoline production, the disruption highlights ongoing maintenance challenges at the facility.
