MDA Space Secures Contract for Next-Generation Canadian Radar Satellite

The Canadian Space Agency has tapped MDA Space to develop a sophisticated synthetic aperture radar satellite, marking a significant expansion of the nation's Earth-observation network. This project represents the core of Ottawa’s long-term strategy to maintain sovereign orbital surveillance capabilities through the advanced Radarsat constellation mission.

The deal encompasses the entire lifecycle of the spacecraft, including design, construction, launch, and necessary ground-system upgrades. MDA will utilize its proprietary Chorus platform for the satellite, the same fourth-generation technology currently undergoing final integration ahead of its own scheduled launch later this year.

Funding for this initiative stems from the 1.01 billion Canadian dollar Radarsat+ program, a federal commitment unveiled in 2023 to ensure the continuity of radar-imaging data. This award builds upon an earlier 44.7 million Canadian dollar agreement granted in December for the procurement of long-lead hardware, signaling a rapid transition into the primary manufacturing phase.
