Sera Prognostics joins $10.4M ARPA-H project for fetal health

A multi-institutional team led by UC San Diego has secured up to $10.4 million from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health to engineer a point-of-care diagnostic test. The project aims to detect fetal hypoxia—a critical drop in oxygen levels—using only a small maternal blood sample during labor.

The research initiative, functioning under the Making Obstetrics Care Smart (MOCS) program, brings together Salt Lake City-based Sera Prognostics and Allegro MicroSystems to modernize delivery room decision-making. By identifying specific protein biomarkers related to placental dysfunction and fetal stress, the team intends to provide clinicians with objective data to intervene before complications escalate. Sera Prognostics will leverage its existing expertise in biomarker discovery to validate signatures that signal fetal distress. The ultimate goal is to transition maternal care from reactive emergency responses to a proactive model, potentially reducing unnecessary medical interventions. Zhenya Lindgardt, president and CEO of Sera Prognostics, noted that the collaboration marks a shift toward precision diagnostics in childbirth, where timely, individualized information remains a persistent challenge in maternal health.
