The Naos-1 site in the Free State represents a strategic pivot toward market-driven power systems, allowing private businesses to source clean electricity across the national grid. By pairing solar generation with massive battery capacity, the project overcomes the intermittency issues that typically constrain renewable reliability. Envision Energy is tasked with the full lifecycle of the storage system, from manufacturing to long-term maintenance under a 25-year service agreement.

Envision Energy Secures 660MWh Storage Deal for South Africa's Naos-1
A 660MWh battery energy storage system will anchor the Naos-1 project near Viljoenskroon, marking South Africa’s largest privately contracted hybrid renewable energy initiative to reach financial close. Envision Energy will provide the storage technology, partnering with SOLA Group and WBHO to integrate 300MW of solar power for national grid wheeling.

John Lee, General Manager of Asia & Africa Markets at Envision Energy, noted that the project validates the role of integrated storage in providing dispatchable power at scale. Ian Burger, Managing Director of SOLA Build, emphasized that the infrastructure is designed to meet the growing corporate demand for flexible, cost-effective energy. This partnership signals a broader shift in the regional energy landscape, where private-sector collaboration is increasingly filling the gap to build a more resilient and sustainable power network.
