Amazon Deepens India AI Infrastructure Push with $13 Billion Commitment

Following a strategic meeting between CEO Andy Jassy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, Amazon has pledged an additional $13 billion to bolster its cloud and artificial intelligence footprint in India. This capital injection brings the company’s total investment commitment in the country to $48 billion through 2030.

The funds are earmarked for expanding Amazon Web Services’ data center capacity across Mumbai and Hyderabad, infrastructure deemed essential for the growing regional demand for AI processing. While Amazon has not provided a granular breakdown of how the $48 billion total will be distributed, these long-term commitments typically encompass a mix of capital expenditures and operational spending. This move aligns Amazon with a broader trend of global tech giants, including Microsoft and Google, who are positioning India as a primary hub for global AI infrastructure.

Beyond cloud computing, Amazon is aggressively scaling its retail and logistics operations to fend off local quick-commerce rivals like Blinkit and Swiggy’s Instamart. The company plans to launch over 20 fulfillment centers and 100 last-mile delivery stations this year, alongside an expansion of its Amazon Now service into more than 300 cities. These efforts arrive as competitors, most notably Walmart-owned Flipkart, move to secure their own logistics dominance with plans to open 1,500 micro-fulfillment centers by 2026.
