Nearly 70% of U.S. Workers Report Toxic Workplace Environments

Nearly 7 out of 10 U.S. employees have endured a toxic work environment, according to a new report by iHire. While the figure represents a slight improvement from 2025, persistent issues with leadership accountability, unresolved internal conflicts, and skepticism regarding the role of AI in office culture remain significant hurdles.

The 2026 Toxic Workplace Trends Report, which surveyed 1,220 professionals, identifies unethical or unsupportive leadership as the primary driver of dysfunction. Roughly 79% of those who experienced toxicity pointed to managers who failed to model professional behavior, while 72% cited poor communication as a recurring failure. These cultural shortcomings carry heavy costs for employers; nearly half of respondents have resigned from roles specifically due to a toxic environment, and over 40% report frequent burnout.

The integration of artificial intelligence adds another layer of uncertainty to the workplace. While some employees see productivity gains, nearly half remain neutral or unsure of AI’s cultural impact. Among those who view the technology negatively, more than half fear it erodes the human element essential for collaboration. Simultaneously, internal reporting mechanisms are failing to bridge the gap. Over a third of employees who witnessed toxic behavior chose not to report it, frequently citing a lack of faith in HR or management. Of those who did come forward, over half reported that their concerns were never addressed, leaving deep-seated conflicts to fester within the organization.
