Adobe Acquires AI Specialist Topaz Labs to Bolster Creative Suite

Adobe is acquiring Topaz Labs, a two-decade-old startup renowned for its Emmy-winning video and image enhancement technology. The move aims to integrate Topaz’s specialized AI models directly into Adobe’s Firefly platform, effectively locking in professional creatives who increasingly rely on on-device processing for high-end production workflows.

Adobe Acquires AI Specialist Topaz Labs to Bolster Creative Suite

Topaz Labs has carved out a niche by developing models like Astra for video upscaling and Wonder for image retouching. Beyond simple filters, the startup developed proprietary methods to run complex AI models on consumer-grade hardware, a technical advantage Adobe intends to leverage to reduce rendering times. Deepa Subramaniam, VP of product marketing for Creative Cloud, noted that the integration will allow users to sharpen details, reduce noise, and restore archival footage without leaving the Adobe ecosystem.

This acquisition serves as a strategic defensive play in a market where competitors like Canva and Blackmagic Design are aggressively courting professional editors. By embedding Topaz’s optimization expertise into its existing suites, Adobe seeks to streamline the experience for designers and photographers who require high-performance tools. While the technology will eventually surface across the Creative Cloud, Topaz will continue to offer its services as standalone products. The transaction is slated to close in the second half of 2026.
