Polestar confirmed the mandate on Thursday, noting that the restriction prevents the rollout of future models despite the company’s efforts to secure a special exemption. US Commerce Department blocks new Polestar EV sales
The Trump administration has denied Polestar authorization to sell new electric vehicles in the United States, citing the "Connected Vehicle Rule" that restricts hardware and software with Chinese origins. While the Swedish brand is owned by the Chinese giant Geely, the decision marks a sharp departure from recent policy regarding its sibling company, Volvo.
This regulatory hurdle arrives shortly after the administration granted Volvo—which shares the same parent company—permission to continue its U.S. operations. In response to the exclusion, Polestar leadership announced a pivot toward European expansion, emphasizing that 94% of its retail volume during the first quarter of 2026 originated outside the United States.
