Dr. Joseph Gomes Recognized for Clinical Leadership in California

The path to the exam room was unconventional for the Sacramento-based physician. Early in his career, while working as a coordinator at Blood Source, his performance caught the attention of executive leadership, who sponsored his undergraduate studies. This initial push into leadership eventually led him to the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, where he graduated in 2017 before completing his residency at the Rio Bravo Family Medicine Program.

His clinical background spans roles at Sutter Health, Adventist Health, and Kaiser Permanente, where he served as both an outpatient family medicine physician and adjunct faculty. In 2025, he launched Gomes Medical Corporation to address what he views as stagnation in breast cancer screening. Dr. Gomes currently holds the distinction of being the only physician in California certified as a clinical breast examiner by MammaCare and as a global health breast educator through Know Your Lemons.

By emphasizing body literacy and comprehensive self-examination, he aims to move beyond standard screenings. His practice provides specialized care for conditions ranging from PCOS to chronic pelvic floor pain, while he continues to use public platforms to advocate for breast health education. He argues that the medical community must refine how it teaches women to identify the 12 different presentations of breast cancer, noting that reliance on the presence of a lump often misses critical early warning signs.
