Instagram Experiments With Deeper Algorithmic Controls

Instagram users may soon gain granular control over their feeds as head of product Adam Mosseri tests new ways to integrate the platform's 'Your Algorithm' feature directly into navigation. The proposed updates shift the tool from a buried setting to an interactive layer accessible via simple swipes and on-screen prompts.

The company is exploring gestures that trigger customization menus, such as pulling down on the main feed or swiping up on Reels. Another prototype introduces specific buttons beneath individual clips, allowing users to signal interest or disinterest in real-time. Mosseri noted that while some of these features are currently in limited testing, others remain experimental and may not reach the final version of the application.

Despite the push for personalization, the platform faces significant pressure from its user base. The most prominent feedback on Mosseri’s announcement highlights a persistent demand for a chronological feed focused exclusively on accounts users follow, rather than AI-driven suggestions. Whether these new controls satisfy that desire or merely add another layer of complexity to the discovery engine remains the core challenge for the development team.
