Alterra, Technip Energies and Neste Launch Modular Recycling Solution

With global plastic production hitting 431 million tons annually, three industry leaders have unveiled Nerea, a standardized modular system designed to fast-track chemical recycling. By replacing bespoke engineering with a repeatable industrial product, the partnership aims to convert hard-to-recycle waste into high-quality petrochemical feedstocks at scale.

Alterra, Technip Energies and Neste Launch Modular Recycling Solution

The joint venture, rooted in a collaboration agreement signed in November 2024, fuses Alterra’s thermochemical liquefaction technology with Technip Energies’ modular engineering expertise and Neste’s experience in circular feedstocks. This standardized approach seeks to eliminate the complexity and financial uncertainty that have historically hindered the growth of plastic recycling infrastructure.

Alterra CEO Fred Schmuck noted that the initiative simplifies the deployment of recycling projects, directly addressing the gap between rising waste volumes and insufficient circularity rates. The Nerea units are engineered for rapid installation across diverse industrial environments, allowing operators to bypass the long lead times associated with custom-built facilities. This shift arrives as regulatory pressures in Europe and global markets drive an urgent demand for recycled raw materials, moving the industry beyond traditional landfill and incineration methods.
