Securing Part 135 air carrier certification from the Federal Aviation Administration, DoorDash is officially moving from a third-party partner to an autonomous operator. The company has unveiled DoorDash Air, an internal initiative focused on custom-built drone technology designed to integrate directly into its existing delivery infrastructure.

DoorDash Air operates out of DoorDash Labs, the same R&D unit responsible for the Dot sidewalk delivery robot currently deployed in Arizona and California. Stanley Tang, co-founder and chief product officer, describes this hardware as part of a broader delivery ecosystem managed by the company’s proprietary Autonomous Delivery Platform. This software acts as the central nervous system, dispatching orders in real-time to human drivers, sidewalk bots, or drones based on efficiency. By controlling both the physical robots and the routing logic, the company aims to differentiate itself from firms that focus exclusively on singular layers of the autonomy stack.
