The policy serves as a direct response to the industry-wide proliferation of automated content, which often lacks first-hand experience or verifiable accountability. By enforcing this standard, Static Media aims to protect its reach of 220 million monthly visits from the dilution of low-quality, AI-generated material. CEO Reggie Renner stated that the company prioritizes content worth reading over the sheer volume of articles, emphasizing that machine learning cannot replicate human editorial judgment or authentic expertise.

Static Media Bans AI-Generated Content Across 32 Brands
Static Media, the publisher behind outlets like Engadget and Jalopnik, has formalized a strict prohibition on the use of generative AI in its editorial output. The mandate, which covers all 32 brands in the company’s portfolio, requires that every article be written by a human and vetted by editorial staff.

Under these new guidelines, the company’s 1,100 writers and editors are strictly prohibited from using AI to produce reviews, news, or features. This includes a ban on using automated tools to fabricate quotes, sources, or statistics. Richard McVey, SVP of Content and SEO, noted that maintaining reader trust hinges on this commitment to human authorship. With approximately 12,500 articles published monthly, the Indianapolis-based company is positioning its editorial workforce as a differentiator in an increasingly automated digital landscape.
