Instacart Launches Real-Time Shelf Monitoring for Retailers

Instacart is transforming physical grocery stores into live, actionable maps. By leveraging data from its network of 600,000 shoppers and computer vision technology, the company is granting retailers and CPG brands a real-time digital window into shelf inventory, aiming to eliminate stockouts and capture lost sales.

Instacart Launches Real-Time Shelf Monitoring for Retailers

The platform processes more than 10 million data points daily, combining shelf scans with insights from 1.6 billion historical orders. This new suite of tools, branded as Inventory Intelligence for grocers and the Store Excellence Portal for brands, allows managers to virtually navigate aisles and identify merchandising gaps before they impact the bottom line.

Traditional inventory systems often rely on periodic counts, leaving stores blind to rapid shifts in stock levels. Instacart’s approach uses Caper Carts and shopper-led scans to monitor high-velocity items, providing granular data on substitution patterns and demand spikes. Retailers like Queen's Price Chopper are already utilizing these insights to orchestrate replenishment more efficiently. For brands, the software quantifies lost revenue down to the individual store and UPC level, enabling teams to prioritize restocking efforts where they are needed most. The technology is currently rolling out to select partners with a broader expansion expected in the coming months.
