Cirba Solutions handled the initial disassembly and shredding of spent battery packs at its Ohio facility, converting them into a concentrated intermediate known as Black Mass. This material was then refined and processed into cathode active material through a strategic supply chain partnership.

GM and Cirba Solutions Launch First 100% Recycled EV Battery Pilot
General Motors and Cirba Solutions have successfully completed a closed-loop pilot program, producing the first EV battery cells using cathode active material composed entirely of recycled nickel, cobalt, and manganese. The initiative signals a shift toward reclaiming critical minerals from end-of-life batteries for use in new vehicle production.
These recycled cells were manufactured by Ultium Cells, a joint venture between GM and LG Energy Solution, before being assembled into packs at GM’s Factory ZERO and Spring Hill facilities. The first vehicles equipped with these batteries rolled off production lines this month. With nearly 14 million EV batteries projected to reach the end of their lifecycle by 2040, the project offers a blueprint for reducing reliance on newly mined resources while bolstering domestic supply chain resilience.
