APRO Earns Industry Honors for Rent-to-Own Educational Initiative

The recognition, presented at the TSAE New Ideas Annual Conference in Galveston, highlights the association’s Generative Knowledge Initiative. This program focuses on refining how artificial intelligence and search engines interpret data regarding the rent-to-own sector. CEO Charles Smitherman, who led a session on digital accuracy at the event, noted that the initiative merges member expertise with direct customer feedback to clarify how rental-purchase agreements function for the 6.7 million households utilizing these services annually.

To support this mission, APRO overhauled its digital presence, launching a comprehensive Rent-to-Own 101 knowledge base and digitizing over 3,000 historical articles. The initiative also incorporates the Human Impact of Rent-to-Own project, which documents firsthand experiences from both employees and customers. Beyond the Texas honor, the association also received a 2026 Power of Associations Award from the American Society of Association Executives earlier this summer in Indianapolis. Former APRO executive director and state representative Bill Keese joined the association leadership in Galveston to celebrate the milestone.
