The financial divide is widening as younger generations struggle to gain traction. While baby boomers are currently the only cohort reporting a decrease in debt, Gen Z and millennials find themselves trapped in a cycle of rising balances and significant psychological strain. Nearly 60% of these younger respondents report feeling constant stress regarding their financial obligations, a stark contrast to the 36% of boomers who share similar concerns.
This pressure is forcing difficult trade-offs. While 41% of Gen X are actively cutting into their retirement savings to manage their liabilities, younger adults are hitting walls earlier in their life cycles. Roughly 38% of Gen Z and 31% of millennials cite debt as the primary barrier preventing them from purchasing a home or saving for the future. Bobbi Rebell, Chief Financial Education Advisor at Accredited Debt Relief, notes that debt hits differently at each life stage. For those in their 20s, it means delaying milestones, whereas for older generations, it necessitates a painful reworking of established retirement plans.
