YouTube introduces AI-powered custom feeds for personalized discovery

YouTube is shifting control of its recommendation engine to the user, announcing a feature that generates custom feeds based on natural language prompts. By leveraging Google’s Gemini AI, viewers can now define specific interests, moods, or time-bound content preferences that appear as dedicated tabs on their home page.

The tool functions by accepting detailed descriptions from users—such as requests for relaxing commentary for a commute or specific niche topics—and curating a stream of videos that match those criteria. These AI-generated feeds act as supplementary tabs rather than replacements for the platform's primary recommendation algorithm, allowing users to toggle between broad discovery and focused viewing habits. The company confirmed that support for multiple custom feeds will begin rolling out across web and mobile platforms next month.

This shift mirrors a broader industry trend toward user-curated discovery. Platforms like Bluesky have long championed modular feed-building, while Meta and Spotify have increasingly integrated generative AI to help users navigate their vast content libraries. According to Emily Moxley, VP of Product Management for Viewer AI, the move is designed to help users tap into the platform’s massive repository of over 20 billion videos, ensuring that specific content remains accessible even as the library continues to grow.
