PlanetiQ Secures $47 Million NOAA Contract for Weather Data
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has finalized a two-year contract with Colorado-based PlanetiQ, valued at up to $47.3 million, to supply critical atmospheric and ionospheric data. This agreement marks a significant expansion of the agency’s reliance on commercial satellite observations for global weather forecasting and space weather monitoring.
This award represents the first major data procurement under NOAA’s ProTech 2.0 Space-Based Environmental Monitoring contract, an IDIQ vehicle with an $8 billion ceiling. Beyond standard atmospheric pressure and moisture readings, the agreement focuses on enhancing temporal resolution. By utilizing observations from non-sun-synchronous and lower-inclination orbits, PlanetiQ aims to improve sampling frequency over tropical and subtropical regions. CEO Ira Scharf noted that the initiative will be bolstered by a next-generation satellite launch slated for this fall, further refining the precision of the atmospheric measurements provided to NOAA and international partners like the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.
