Bond Yields Slide as Oil Prices Retreat and Election Focus Intensifies

The price of Brent crude plummeted 8% to $104 a barrel on Monday, triggering a broad retreat in government bond yields across the U.S. and Europe. This sharp decline in energy costs cooled immediate inflation concerns, prompting investors to recalibrate their expectations for central bank interest rate policies.

Bond Yields Slide as Oil Prices Retreat and Election Focus Intensifies

The 10-year Treasury yield slipped to 4.884% from Friday’s 4.928% close. Beyond the relief provided by cheaper oil, demand for Treasurys gained momentum from a softening dollar and lingering investor skepticism regarding the long-term returns on artificial intelligence investments. Dat Tong of Exness noted that while markets still anticipate a 25 basis-point Federal Reserve hike in December, expectations for further aggressive tightening through mid-2027 have moderated.

European markets mirrored this trend. The U.K. 10-year gilt yield hit an eight-week low of 5.198%, while German 10-year bunds fell to 3.291%. These moves persisted despite Fitch Ratings shifting the outlook on France’s A+ rating from stable to negative, citing a wider deficit and increased borrowing costs. Investors are now pivoting toward the U.S. midterm elections and Wednesday’s Treasury quarterly refunding announcement. Analysts expect the Treasury to signal shifts in debt issuance, potentially favoring shorter-dated bills over longer-term bonds to navigate the current fiscal landscape.
