Meta opens Muse video and voice chats to US users

Meta has made Muse Voice, its call and video-chat feature for the company’s consumer AI agent, available to everyone in the United States. The feature gives Muse an animated avatar that can respond during live conversations, and users can customize its appearance.

The feature was first introduced at Meta’s Connect developer conference in September. It is powered by the Muse Realtime Avatar and Muse Realtime Voice models. Meta says the avatar uses “subtle expressions and gestures” suited to the conversation’s tone.

Users can interact with Jolly, the default animated character, while asking questions or requesting tasks. They can also change the avatar to resemble a person, an animal or another character. Meta says giving Muse a humanlike presence could help users feel more connected to the AI agent.

Meta chief AI officer Alexandr Wang announced the rollout in a blog post and on X, sharing a demo of his own Muse avatar, a fluffy white dog. In the video, Wang jokes that his love of posting memes on X may have got him in trouble with his boss. The avatar suggests adding disclaimers to memes that could be misread as Meta endorsing risqué material.

The live conversations are available on mobile, the web and Mac, Meta said. Support is expected later on its AI Glasses and the planned Muse Charm hardware device. The company also plans to launch a Tamagotchi-like wearable for Muse before year-end; its small screen will display the avatar as users talk to the agent and ask it to carry out tasks.
